AI assistive technologies (ATS) for persons with disabilities (PWDS) in Africa
This report maps the various AI Assistive Technologies that improve accessibility for persons with disabilities in Africa and analyses the challenges impeding the development and adoption of these ATs in Africa, including the lack of representative datasets to train AI models, proper policy safeguards, digital skills gaps, and lack of funding for AT projects. Finally, the report recommends steps to overcome these bottlenecks to achieve widespread deployment and use of ATs in African countries. This study was made possible by a grant provided by the International Development Research Center (IDRC), SIDA, and Artificial Intelligence for Development Africa.
